Bridge the language barriers presented by a diverse community

US News BadgeTrained, skilled ESL teachers are in demand across the US. Due to legislation changes, teaching English as a second language in Pennsylvania now requires the Program Specialist: ESL certificate. Similar requirements exist in other states. Teaching English as a Second Language certification is an add-on certificate available to students that currently possess a Pennsylvania Instructional I or Instructional II teaching certificate.

Key Program Features

  • Approved by Pennsylvania Department of Education and accredited by Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
  • Developed and taught by expert faculty who integrate readings, discussion, practicum, and case study experience within each course.
  • Taught completely online through Drexel's highly interactive e-Learning method, it fits into your busy personal and work schedules.

The 12-credit TESL certificate program covers the theory and practice of second language education, the structure and sound of English, the design and assessment of ESL course materials, as well as broader issues in intercultural learning. It does not require that the instructor speak another language. Credits earned through this program may be applied toward the MS in the Science of Instruction.

This program satisfies PA State of Education requirements for certification in Teaching English as a Second Language. However, prospective students outside of Pennsylvania are advised to check with their state authorities to determine whether this program is appropriate for their case. Students teaching outside of Pennsylvania can also contact the School of Education at 215-895-6770.

The program can be completed in as little as 6 to 12 months.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis for all four terms. Apply today! See admissions criteria for specific supplemental materials required.
